Abstract

This study aims to investigate the occurrence, distribution, and bioecological characteristics of Microtus transcaspicus within the Lower Amu Darya State Biosphere Reserve during 2020–2023. Field research was conducted using standard zoological, zoogeographical, and biometric methods, including trap-line sampling and camera trapping across different seasons and habitats. The results indicate that the species occurs in low and spatially uneven numbers, with annual fluctuations ranging from 6 to 16 recorded individuals. The species is primarily associated with moist habitats such as riverbanks, orchards, and irrigated fields. Analysis of population structure revealed a predominance of females and a significant proportion of individuals of undetermined sex. Notably, M. transcaspicus was not captured using conventional trapping methods in previous large-scale surveys, suggesting methodological limitations or specific behavioral traits. The findings highlight the need for improved research approaches and emphasize the negative impact of water scarcity and climate change on habitat conditions and regional biodiversity.
